Devotional : SUBMISSION TO GOD'S GIVEN AUTHORITY (Romans 13)

Our Scripture for Today:

Romans 13:1 (NIV): "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God."

Paul begins by asserting that all governing authorities are appointed by God. This means our submission to them is, in essence, an act of obedience to God. He clarifies that rulers serve as "God's ministers" to maintain order and punish evil. As Christians, we are called to be exemplary citizens – honest, law-abiding, tax-paying, and, importantly, prayerful for our leaders. This submission is not born of fear, but from a clear conscience before God. The only exception is when human law directly contradicts God's law; in such rare cases, we "must obey God rather than men" (Acts 4:19).

Paul declares that the only "debt" we should perpetually carry is the obligation to love one another. This love is not a fleeting emotion but a tangible act that fulfills the entire law. He cites several commandments—against adultery, murder, stealing, coveting—and summarizes them all with the command to "Love your neighbor as yourself." True love actively seeks the well-being of others and does them no harm.

AWAKE!!!

With a sense of urgency, Paul calls us to "wake up from our slumber." He reminds us that "our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed." The "night" of darkness and worldly living is fading, and the "day" of Christ's return is at hand. This realization should prompt us to "cast off the works of darkness"—behaviors contrary to God's will—and instead "put on the armor of light." This powerful metaphor means to "clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ." It's more than adopting His character; it's allowing Jesus Himself to be our covering, our defense, and our guide. We are to actively choose not to "make provision for the flesh," but to walk in the Spirit, partner with Christ, and live lives that reflect His light to the world.

Romans 13:2 (NIV): "Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves."

Acts 4:19 (NIV): "But Peter and John replied, 'Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges!'"

Romans 13:8 (NIV): "Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law."

Romans 13:9 (NIV): "The commandments, 'You shall not commit adultery,' 'You shall not murder,' 'You shall not steal,' 'You shall not covet,' and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"

Romans 13:10 (NIV): "Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law."

Romans 13:11 (NIV): "And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed."

Romans 13:12 (NIV): "The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light."

Romans 13:14 (NIV): "Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

We come before You, Thank You for our leaders, Lord, and help us to be submissive and be good citizens.

Fill our hearts with an overflowing, perpetual love for one another. May our lives be a living testimony to Your love, fulfilling Your law in every interaction.

Lord, awaken us from any spiritual slumber. Help us to recognize the urgency of the times and to cast off every deed of darkness.

Empower us to live lives that glorify You as we eagerly await Your glorious return. Amen.
