Devotional: Glimpses of Glory – The Gentle Drift, and Why We Must Stay Alert (Hebrews 2:1-4)

Happy Saturday 😊✨! It’s incredible how quickly the week flies by. We’ve spent the last couple of days just soaking in the sheer majesty of Jesus – how He’s God’s final, perfect word, and how He’s absolutely supreme, far above any angel. Knowing that truth is powerful, and today, the book of Hebrews gives us a really important, though gentle, warning. Let’s open our hearts to it.

Our Scripture for Today: Hebrews 2:1-18 - "Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?"

DISCUSSION :

So, after hearing about Jesus' unmatched greatness, Hebrews turns to us and says, "Therefore we must give the more earnest heed." This isn't just a polite suggestion; it's a serious, command with a real sense of urgency. And why? "Lest we drift away."

Have you ever seen a small boat or a canoe on the lagoon that isn't properly anchored? It doesn't usually just capsize suddenly. Instead, it slowly, almost without anyone noticing, drifts further and further from the safety of the shore until it's lost at sea.

That’s what "drifting away" often looks like in our spiritual lives – it's not usually a dramatic, overnight fall from faith. It's a gradual, quiet moving away from God's truth, from consistent prayer, from fellowship with other believers, from studying His Word. We get busy, life gets noisy, and before we know it, we're further out than we ever intended.

Think back to the old Mosaic Law (Ten commandments) , which we know was delivered, in part, by angels (Acts 7:53). That law was "steadfast" – firm, unyielding – and anyone who broke it definitely faced "a just reward," meaning punishment. If neglecting a word delivered by angels brought serious consequences, how much more serious will it be if we "neglect so great a salvation" that was brought to us by Jesus Himself? The stakes are infinitely higher!

And get this: our salvation is called "great" for good reason. It was started by Jesus Himself, confirmed by eyewitnesses who actually walked and talked with Him, and then powerfully validated by God through "signs and wonders," "miracles," and "gifts of the Holy Spirit." This means our faith isn't built on human stories or fleeting emotions; it's a divine reality, confirmed by God Himself – always "according to His own will," not by us trying to manipulate or "work up" a miracle.

Where are you drifting away

Are there any areas in your life where you might be slowly drifting

 – maybe in your secret place , prayers, consecrations or holiness ?

What's one practical step you can take today to "give more earnest heed" to Jesus' words and anchor yourself firmly back in Him? Don't let the gentle drift pull you away.

 PRAYER :

Father God, thank You for this loving warning.

Father, Forgive me  for any times I 've neglected Your incredible salvation or allowed myself to drift, (If u remember u can name them)

Please, Lord, stir my hearts today to cling tightly to Jesus' words, to know that they are truth and life .

Help me to truly value this amazing gift You've given us,

Lord, keep me firmly anchored in You, even when the currents try to pull me away.

In Jesus name

Amen.
