Devotional: ROMANS 4:1-6 | THE IMPUTED RIGHTEOUSNESS OF CHRIST
Yesterday, we discussed the profound truth that we are declared righteous through faith in Jesus Christ. The Scriptures are clear: for us to stand in the presence of a holy God, we must ourselves be made holy. As Psalm 24:3-4 asks, "Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in His holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart."
Romans 4 serves as a beautiful reminder of God's immense love and grace. It reveals that He has made a way to forgive our sins and declare us righteous, not based on our own efforts, but on His gracious gift. We do not have to earn our righteousness through our works. The apostle Paul quotes King David, who described this blessing in Romans 4:6 (NKJV): "Just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works."
It is truly a blessing to receive the righteousness of God as a free gift, rather than having to work for it. This gift is freely given to all who believe.
WHAT DOES "IMPUTED RIGHTEOUSNESS" MEAN?
"Imputed righteousness" is a core tenet of Christian theology. It refers to the act by which God credits or "imputes" the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ to the account of believers. It is not something we earn; it is a legal declaration by God based on our faith. As we established from Romans 3, our faith in Jesus Christ is the key to receiving God's righteousness, not our good deeds or religious rituals. The moment we place our trust in Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are instantly declared right with God. This is the essence of imputed righteousness.
Abraham stands as a foundational example of this truth. He was justified—declared righteous—not by his actions, but by his faith in God. Romans 4:3 states, "For what does the Scripture say? 'Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.'" (NKJV) God looked at Abraham's faith and credited righteousness to him, a righteousness he had not earned. In the same way, God looks at our faith in Christ and credits us with His perfect righteousness.
