Devotional : THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL (Romans 1)
Scripture for Today: Romans 1:16-17
> "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith.'"

In this chapter, the Apostle Paul lays out the foundational truths of Christianity, starting with the core message: the gospel.
1. The Gospel's Power: Paul boldly states he is "not ashamed of the gospel." In a sophisticated, worldly city like Rome, a message centered on a crucified Jewish savior might have seemed foolish. Yet, Paul knew its true nature—it is the "power of God." The gospel isn't just a good idea or a moral code; it's a divine force that brings salvation and completely transforms lives. We don't make it powerful; we simply present it, and its inherent power works on those who believe.
2. The Revelation of Righteousness: The gospel reveals God's righteousness, which is His verdict of innocence upon those who have faith in Jesus. This is a profound concept. God, in His perfect justice, treats the sinner who believes as if they had never sinned at all. This righteousness is not something we earn through our efforts but is received as a gift, solely "by faith from first to last." This is the core principle of grace—we are made right with God not by our good works, but by trusting in what Christ has done for us.
3. The Problem of Suppressed Truth: Paul also explains why the gospel is so necessary: humanity has a deep problem with sin. God has revealed Himself through creation, making His power and divine nature evident to all. However, humanity has consistently rejected this knowledge. Instead of glorifying God and being thankful, people have suppressed the truth, becoming foolish in their thoughts and worshipping created things rather than the Creator. This ingratitude and deliberate rebellion against God is why we are all "without excuse."
4. God's Righteous Judgment: The wrath of God is revealed against this ungodliness and unrighteousness. This is not the petty anger of a human being, but the holy, righteous revulsion of God's perfect nature against what is a contradiction of His holiness. Because humanity has chosen sin and turned away from Him, God "gave them up" to the self-destructive consequences of their choices. This is a sobering reminder that there are real, destructive consequences to sin.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for the power of the gospel.
Thank you that through faith in Jesus, I can be made righteous in your sight. Forgive me for the times I have suppressed your truth, failed to glorify you, or been ungrateful for all you have done.
Help me to live by faith and to never be ashamed of the good news of Jesus Christ, who alone is the source of all salvation and hope. Amen.
