Devotional : A LIVING SACRIFICE (Romans 12)
Our Scripture for today
> "I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship." (Romans 12:1)
>
*The Call to a Living Sacrifice*
This verse is a call to action. Paul "beseeches" or pleads with us, appealing to our will to make a conscious choice. This choice is rooted in God's immense mercy—the grace, forgiveness, and new life we've received in Christ. We are to offer our entire being—our bodies, minds, and wills—to God. This isn't a one-time event, but an ongoing, moment-by-moment dedication.
The image of a "living sacrifice" is a powerful one. Unlike the sacrifices of the Old Testament, which were killed and burned on an altar, we are called to bring our lives to God's altar and stay there, alive. This means our daily life—our work, our relationships, our thoughts, and our actions—becomes our act of worship. It's a complete offering of ourselves, not just a portion of our time or energy. It requires us to bring our whole selves to God, not just our service or work for Him.
*The Pathway to Transformation*
> "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." (Romans 12:2)
>
If the first verse tells us what to do (offer ourselves as a living sacrifice), this second verse tells us how to do it.
We are warned against being "conformed to this world," which means resisting the patterns, values, and mindsets of a culture that lives in rebellion against God. The world's way is to put self first, to chase after temporary pleasures, and to measure success by human standards.
The alternative is to "be transformed," and the battleground for this change is our mind. The Greek word used here is metamorphoo, from which we get the English word metamorphosis. Just as a caterpillar is completely changed into a butterfly, our minds can be completely remade by God's truth. This transformation happens when we fill our minds with God's Word and align our thinking with His. It is not about simply "doing" the right things, but about a deep, internal change that reorders our desires and perspectives.
When we allow God to renew our minds, our lives become a living demonstration of His will. We don't have to guess what God wants; we can "prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God" through a life that is being made holy by Him.
*Practical Outworkings of a Transformed Life*
The rest of Romans 12 provides a list of practical ways this transformed life plays out in our relationships with others—in the church and in the world.
Serving others with humility: We are one body in Christ, with different gifts given by grace. We are not to think of ourselves more highly than we ought, but to use our gifts to serve one another (Romans 12:3-8).
Loving without hypocrisy: Our love for one another should be sincere and active. We are to "abhor what is evil" and "cling to what is good" (Romans 12:9).
Persevering in all circumstances: We are called to be "fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer" (Romans 12:11-12).
Treating enemies with kindness: Instead of seeking revenge, we are to "live peaceably with all men" and "overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:18, 21). This is a radical and powerful act, reflecting the character of God.
This shows that a life offered to God is not a passive one. It is a vibrant, active, and relational life—a life of worship that is lived out in community and in the world.
Consider your own life. Are you actively resisting conformity to the world, or are you passively being shaped by it?
*Prayer:*
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your abundant mercy shown to me in Christ.
I choose to offer myself to You today as a living sacrifice. Lord, please help me to not be conformed to the patterns of this world.
Renew my mind by Your truth so that my life may prove Your good, acceptable, and perfect will. Help me to love others without hypocrisy, to serve with humility, and to overcome evil with good.
May my life be a continual act of worship to You . In Jesus' name, Amen.
