Scripture for the Day: Romans 13:1

Every person, including Christians, is called to be subject to the governing authorities. The Apostle Paul, writing during the time of the Roman Empire, reminds us that all authority ultimately comes from God. Even when a government isn’t a democracy or is unfriendly to Christians, its power is part of God’s plan. Sometimes, a nation’s leaders may be appointed by God not to bless the people, but to bring about a time of judgment or correction.
Because governments have their authority from God, resisting them is seen as resisting God's own plan. The consequence for those who resist is judgment upon themselves. God uses government as a tool to check man's sinful nature. It's an effective way to resist the effects of humanity's fallenness.
Christians should aim to be the best citizens. While our ultimate loyalty is to God, we honor Him by being good citizens: we are honest, we pay our taxes, and we cause no trouble for the state. Most importantly, we are called to pray for our leaders and government officials, as they are described as "God’s ministers." They have a ministry in God's plan, just as church leaders do do.
We are to be subject to the government not just out of fear of punishment, but out of a conviction of what is right before God—"for conscience' sake." This obedience is never blind. We obey with a clear conscience, knowing that if a government ever orders us to do something that contradicts God's law, our primary command is to obey God rather than men. (Acts 5:29)
Paying taxes is part of our duty, as in a sense, we are supporting God's work. By rendering to all people what is due—whether it's taxes, respect, or honor—we live out our faith and show our trust in God's ultimate authority over all things.
Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves." - Romans 13:2
"Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good." - Romans 13:3-4
"Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake." - Romans 13:5
"For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor." - Romans 13:6-7
*"We ought to obey God rather than men." - Acts 5:29 (used to clarify the limits of submission)
*Prayer:*
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the authority you have established in our world.
We pray for our leaders and all those in positions of power. Give them wisdom, guidance, and the heart to do what is right. Help us to be good citizens, submitting to the laws of the land and honoring those in authority.
We pray that our lives would reflect our ultimate loyalty to you.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
