Devotional :THE GLORY OF THE NEW COVENANT, Vol. 2
Good morning people of God
Our Scripture for today: 2 Corinthians 3:7-11
II Corinthians 3:7, 9-11 NKJV
[7] But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away,
[9] For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. [10] For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. [11] For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious.
Discussion
The nexus Apostle Paul draws here is a contrast between the old covenant and the new covenant, or in other words the covenant of Moses and the covenant of Christ.
As Paul considers the new covenant, he digresses to marvel at its wonder. What a contrast there is between the two covenants! The old covenant, though it came with glory, ultimately proved to be a ministry of death. Because of humanity's insufficiency, it could not give life and could only pronounce a sentence of death.
Verses 12-18
In these verses, the Apostle Paul helps us understand the consequences of the differences between the two covenants. The veil on Moses' face resulted in a hardening of the people's hearts. Because of the veil, they were unable to face the reality of who God is. They could hide from God's light, and consequently, their obedience also fell away.
Paul adds that this same situation continues today. When people hear the law of Moses read, a veil remains, just as it did when the old covenant was first proclaimed. The words are present, but their significance is hidden. If their eyes had been opened to see the true meaning of what God was doing, they would have recognized that the old covenant has been abolished in Christ. However, they have failed to see what Christ offers because, like the people of old, they prefer the veil to remain.
Prayers
Lord, we thank You for the truth found in Your Word.
We pray that as we have studied the contrast between the old and new covenants, You would open our eyes to see the surpassing glory of what You have accomplished in Christ.
Help us to understand the significance of the veil being removed, and to not let anything harden our hearts to Your truth.
We ask for the Holy Spirit to guide us, so that we may not only hear Your Word but also live it out, walking in the freedom and righteousness that the new covenant provides.
May our lives reflect the transformation that comes from beholding Your glory, and may we be Your witnesses in this world of darkness
In Jesus' name
Amen.
