Devotional : EXAMINE YOURSELF
Good morning people of God 😊
Scripture for Today
> "Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?"
> — 2 Corinthians 13:5
In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul asks a question that can make us feel uncomfortable: "Am I really a Christian?" It's a deeply personal challenge, not an invitation to doubt our salvation, but to honestly assess our faith.
It's easy to look at others and find flaws, but the mirror of self-examination is the one we must turn toward ourselves first. As Paul reminds us, the Corinthians were quick to criticize him while failing to look at their own lives. This is a crucial first step—to humbly submit ourselves to Christ's scrutiny, asking him to reveal what grieves his Spirit. This kind of self-examination isn't meant to make us focus on our sin, but to draw us closer to Christ. It’s an act of surrender that can bring peace and freedom to our souls.
The proof of our faith isn't found in a quiet moment alone in a closet. The real test is in the everyday world. What does your life show? A religion that can't stand up to the pressures and temptations of daily life isn't a solid foundation.
So, what are we looking for when we test ourselves? We’re looking for real evidence that Jesus Christ is in us. This doesn't mean we need to be perfect. The evidence is not about flawlessness, but about a transformed life. As the great preacher Charles Spurgeon put it, a true Christian carries the cross in their heart. When Christ lives within you, his presence transforms your perspective, making the troubles of this world seem light by comparison. Christ in the heart means he is believed in, beloved, trusted, and communed with daily. It means your life becomes a temple where he walks.
Paul knew some people were disqualified—not because of their struggles, but because their thinking and values were worldly, not of the Lord. It’s a hard truth, but it's better to face it now than when it’s too late. The word for "disqualified" is the opposite of "test." If we fail to test ourselves now, we might ultimately fail the final test. This isn't about condemnation; it's a call to honest reflection and a renewed commitment to let Christ live in you.
Prayer
Lord, help me to humbly and honestly examine my heart today. I don't want to just assume I am a follower of yours. Show me where my life truly reflects your presence and where I need to let you take a stronger hold. Give me the courage to face hard truths and the grace to be transformed by your Spirit. Amen.
