Devotional : THE BIBLICAL STANDARD FOR GIVING (2 Corinthians 9:1-7)

Happy weekend, people of God, we bless God for a fulfilled week

Glory be to his name

Scripture of the Day:

2 Corinthians 9:6-7: "But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver."

The way we give reveals the condition of our hearts. God isn't looking for a transactional exchange where we give something to get something back. Instead, He's looking for a heart that gives freely, joyfully, and with a sense of purpose. This isn't just about money; it’s about giving our time, our energy, and our resources.

The Principle of the Sower

The Bible compares giving to a farmer planting seeds. If a farmer holds back and plants only a few seeds, he might have more seed in his barn for a while, but his harvest will be small. The farmer who sows generously will reap a bountiful harvest.

This same principle applies to our giving. If we give sparingly, we can expect to reap sparingly. If we give bountifully, we will also reap bountifully. This is a promise from God, and it's a blessing that extends beyond just material things. When we give with a generous heart, we reap spiritual blessings as well. We can trust that God will provide for our needs, just as He promised in Philippians 4:19: "And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus."

The Heart Behind the Gift

The most important part of giving isn't the amount, but the attitude of the heart. The apostle Paul tells us to give “as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity.”

This means our giving should be intentional and willing, not reluctant or forced. God doesn't want us to give out of guilt or obligation, like paying taxes. He wants us to give because we genuinely want to, because we’ve purposed it in our hearts.

The New Testament word for "cheerful" is hilaros, from which we get the English word “hilarious.” God doesn't want us to give reluctantly; He wants us to give with joy and delight. This is because God Himself is a cheerful giver. He delights in blessing us with good gifts and wants us to reflect His character in our own giving.

Reflect on this

Is your giving a joyful experience, or does it feel like an obligation?

What does your giving reveal about the true purposes of your heart?

How can you begin to give with more intention and cheerfulness this week?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for the countless blessings you have poured into our lives.

Forgive us for the times we have given reluctantly or out of a sense of duty.

Help us to cultivate a heart that gives with joy and purpose, knowing that you are the ultimate cheerful giver.

 In Jesus’ name, Amen.
