Devotional: The superiority of our high priest. (Hebrews 7:1-28)

 We give glory to God for how He has  encouraged us through His word not to get weary of doing good and that our reward will surely come. Blessed be God!

Today, our scriptural reading is; Hebrews 7:1-28. Let's do well to go through these verses.

Hebrews 7:1-5 KJV

[1] For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; [2] to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; [3] without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. [4] Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. [5] And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham...

DISCUSSION

We would consider and dive into some verses in this chapter.

Hebrews 7:19 KJV For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God

.

When we look at the verses before verse 19, we would see how Melchizedek was a priest of the most high God and how Abraham gave a tenth part of all he acquired from the slaughter of the kings(Genesis 14:1-24). The scriptures explained to us that Melchizedek was a high priest that even Abraham needed to give him a tithe because of his spiritual authority over him. Now, all these are good but they were not enough.

Hebrews 7:11-12 KJV

[11] If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? [12] For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

So, the above verse made us to understand that the priesthood of Melchizedek and Aaron wasn't enough, and if priesthood would be changed there has to be a change in the laws as well, so going back to verse 19;

Hebrews 7:19 KJV For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

In its weakness and unprofitableness, the law made nothing perfect. The law does a great job of setting God’s perfect standard but it does not give the power to keep that standard. So, to keep God's standard, we need the superior priest who is our Lord Jesus. Therefore, the law is valuable as it shows us God’s perfect standard, but it was not ultimately intended to be the basis of a man’s walk with God. This is because the law is weak and unprofitable when it comes to saving our soul or giving us power over sin. The law provides expert diagnosis of our sin problem, which is absolutely essential. But the law does not provide the cure to our sin problem. Only Jesus can save us from our sin problems.

So, because we have a better priesthood,  and a better High Priest, we also have a better hope and draw near to God. Our hope is in Jesus, not in the Law of Moses or our ability to keep it. Glory!!!

Reflection;

Have I been keeping the law religiously or have I been keeping the Lord's standard by the power Jesus Christ gives.

Prayers

I choose to follow Jesus and His words.

I am under the power and the grace of Jesus and not under the law because he's the superior priest.

In Jesus' name.🙏🏾
