Devotional: Living a Life That Honors God (Hebrews 13)

Our Scripture for today : Hebrews 13:1-6 (NIV)

> "Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.' So we say with confidence, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?'"

Discussion

Hebrews 13 provides practical instructions for living a life that truly honors God, reminding us that our faith isn't just about what we believe, but how we live.

Let Brotherly love continue. This isn't just a warm feeling; it's an active, consistent love shown through hospitality, especially to strangers (fellow believers we may not know well). It means remembering those who are suffering, as if their pain were our own. This practical love reflects God's heart for others.

Next, the scripture emphasizes the sanctity of marriage. It's meant to be honored by everyone, and sexual intimacy is to be reserved for the marriage bed. In a world that often devalues and redefines marriage, Christians are called to uphold God's beautiful design for this foundational relationship. This also reminds us that all sexual expression outside of marriage is displeasing to God and carries His judgment.

Then comes a crucial call to contentment. We're encouraged to live "free from the love of money" and to be "content with what you have." This isn't a passive acceptance of mediocrity, but an active trust in God's provision, knowing that He has promised, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." Our contentment flows from our confidence in His presence and provision, not from our possessions.

Finally, the chapter guides us on how to relate to authorities and to remain rooted in grace. We are to remember and follow godly leaders whose lives reflect their faith. And importantly, we are warned against being "carried about with various and strange doctrines." Our hearts are established not by following rigid rules or ceremonies, but by grace—God's undeserved favor through Jesus. This grace empowers us to offer a "sacrifice of praise" continually, not through old rituals, but as "the fruit of our lips" – heartfelt worship and gratitude to God.

Living righteously, therefore, is about active love, honoring God's design for relationships, cultivating contentment, respecting godly leadership, and remaining anchored in the liberating truth of God's grace.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for these clear instructions on how to live a life that honors You.

Help me to honor your design for relationships and to live with purity and integrity.

God,  help me to trust fully in your promise to never leave or forsake me. Make my confidence be in You and you alone.

Guide me to submit to godly leadership and to remain firmly rooted in the truth of your grace, rather than being swayed by various doctrines.

May my life be a continuous sacrifice of praise to You,

In Jesus name 🙏
